12 fun things to do with your children in the Valleys this half term

It’s almost the May half term but luckily we have plenty of tips to keep the whole family entertained – whatever their favourite pastime.

When and where does it take place?

Park and Dare Theatre, Treorchy on Thursday, June 2 at 2pm.

How much will it cost?

Tickets are £10 each or £35 for a family of four.

What activities are taking place?

Today is the day that Pongo the Pig has been waiting for – that’s right, it’s his birthday! He’s been dropping hints to his friends all year, so is looking forward to a fantastic party… but the trouble is, nobody seems to remember!

Help make Pongo’s Party a day to remember, by joining in a show full of fun, songs and laughter – take part in the town’s biggest ever game of pass the parcel and join the largest children’s band.

2. Aberdare Festival

When and where does it take place?

Saturday, May 28, at Aberdare Park. Gates will open from 11am to 5pm.

How much will it cost?

Entrance to the park is absolutely free.

What activities are taking place?

There will be live music throughout the day on the main stage, offering something for everyone, featuring such tribute acts as Only One Direction, Beeyonce, In The Mix, Like Olly and Living on a Prayer.

Other attractions on the day include a junior assault course, land zorbs, outdoor roller skating, donkey rides, gyro wheel, The Mad Scientist Show and a soft play area for under-fives.

There will also be stilt walkers, jugglers and balloon model-makers throughout the day.

Other attractions on the day include a family funfair, fun inflatables for all ages, a model boats display and the chance to go along and meet the farm animals and exotic animals – and lots more.

You may also bump into a full-sized dinosaur!

3. Bank Holiday Fun at Caerphilly Castle

When and where does it take place?

Caerphilly Castle, Castle Street, Caerphilly. From 10am to 5pm on May 29 and 30.

How much will it cost?

£6 for adults, children under 16 and senior citizens and students £4.20, family ticket £16.20, Cadw members are free.

What activities are taking place?

Step back in time and watch as the history of this medieval castle comes alive with the sight, sounds and smell of the period.

There will also be the chance to meet medieval characters, there will be hands-on activities as well as living history talks and displays.

4. National Lido of Wales

When and where does it take place?

Pontypridd Lido, Ynysangharad Park, Pontypridd. From Saturday, May 28 the Lido is back open between 7.30am and 7.15pm.

How much will it cost?

Free for everyone although there is a charge of £2.50 for the pools inflatables.

What activities are taking place?

Swimming sessions are open from 7.30am for lane swimming followed by casual swimming sessions daily until 7.15pm but booking is essential.

Main pool – this is fantastic for the serious swimmers among us the 25 metre pool is perfect for a few laps or to take part in an aquafit class.

Activity pool – popular among the younger swimmers it has inflatable fun from hand boats, stand-up paddle boarding and zorbing wheels.

Splash pool – the semi-circular pool is aimed at the smallest visitors and is complete with an umbrella water fountain.

5. Merthyr Rising Festival

When and where does it take place?

Penderyn Square, High Street, Merthyr Tydfil. On June 3, 4 and 5.

How much will it cost?

You can get a weekend wristband for £10 which will give you access to two days on Penderyn Square, all debates/talks and Theatr Soar plus special discounts during the weekend. There are additional costs for other events

What activities are taking place?

The festival will be a reflection of Merthyr’s proud history, its influence on social equality and its creativity.

The three days of events, in both indoor and outdoor venues in the heart of the town, featuring inspiring and thought-provoking speakers and debates

There will be a varied line-up of top-quality music, comedy, literature, drama, film and street performance.

6. Animal Character Day

Admission is free.

Fun filled day with animal character guests, a large selection of children’s rides, bouncy castles, crazy golf, stalls, games, refreshments and face painting.

7. Woodland skills

When and where does it take place?

Pen Y Fan Pond Country Park on Thursday, June 2 from 10am to 2pm.

Spend some time in the wildwoods and learn how to build a shelter and light a fire with rangers.

8. Upcycled Herby Face Planters

When and where does it take place?

Cwmcarn Forest, Abercarn on Thursday, June 2 at 10am.

How much will it cost?

£2.50 a child ages three and over. Booking advisable as spaces are limited.

What activities are taking place?

Get creative with crafty bits and pieces, seeds and soil making family of funny faced pots (using recycled pop bottles) and planting with soil and herb seeds for you to take home and enjoy.

9. Pop Factor The Concert

When and where does it take place?

Blackwood Miners’ Institute on Thursday, June 2.

10. Walk, trails and family fun

Dare Valley Country Park

There’s plenty to do at Dare Valley with 500 acres of countryside.

Walk on the network of walks and trails experiencing nature at its best as well as spectacular views or if you want to get even closer to nature camp on the campsite.

11. Solar Observation

When and where does it take place?

Ferndale, Solar Observation – Greenwood Park on Thursday, June 2 from noon to 4pm

How much will it cost?

Free, the session run for 30 minutes, and book is required, please click here to book your place and remember to arrive five minutes before your session starts.

What activities are taking place?

View the wonders of the solar system in the mobile planetarium which will transport you into space.

People can enjoy safe views of our closest star, the Sun. Using specialised telescopes from provided by Dark Sky Wales participants will be able to explore the surface of our star seeing phenomena such as Sunspots, Prominences, solar flares, granulation and coronal mass ejections.

Close up views of these phenomena can be experienced safely in the company of an experienced astronomer. Participants will also get a free pair of solar glasses that can be used for future observations of the Sun.

12. The Great Outdoors

Pen Y Fan pond Country Park, Manmoel, Oakdale on Friday, June 3 10am to 3pm.
