23 unmissable things to do in Cardiff this May

Woah, woah, woah – May already? Who put that there?!

Yes, it’s time for our monthly preview of the very best events coming to Cardiff over the next thirty or so days.

If you like food, music, films, having fun and bank holidays (who doesn’t?), you’re in for a treat!

1 May: Gin Stock – The guys at the DEPOT are opening their doors for another big do, South Wales’s coolest gin festival. There will be more than 50 types of gin on offer from a range of producers, experts from the gin world and big beats in the Gin ‘N’ Juice Garden. 1 May: Cardiff’s Vintage Home Furniture Market – Lou Lou’s Vintage Fair are holding the first of a new series of fairs, turning to retro homeware and collectables instead of clothing. (Sun 1 May, entry £2, City Hall, Gorsedd Gardens Road CF10 3ND – more info)

3-7 May: Of Mice and Men – Most people born in the last two decades of the 20th century will no doubt remember this as being the best compulsory book on the GCSE English Literature curriculum. John Steinbeck’s novel about two migrant farm workers in search of new beginnings has been transformed into this tense piece of theatre. Simple Knots

4 May: Simple Knots Craft Club – If you fancy doing some arts and crafts in the comfort of fellow crafty types, head to this lovely monthly meet-up. Bring your own materials. (Wed 4 May, The Little Man Coffee Co, Ivor House, Bridge Street CF10 2EE – more info)

5 May: Daytrip: Tacocat – Seattle surfy garage popsters Tacocat make their debut Welsh appearance at this night of fast-paced fun music. 8 May: Just Eat It – This doc looks at society’s odd interest in food. We can’t get enough of foodie TV shows, magazines and blogs, yet we waste half of what we produce. Two people record their six month journey of eating only food that is or will be discarded in order to rethink their experience of food. 11 May: Bridget Christie – Fresh off the back of two hugely successful stand-up comedy shows, Christie brings her sharp-witted brand of comedy to Cardiff’s The Glee with a highly anticipated new show. (Wed 11 May, The Glee Bute St, CF10 5BZ – more info)

12 May: Future of the Left – If you’re a FOTL fan, stop reading this and get yourself a ticket, stat! This is going to be a sell-out. Following on from their hotly released album The Peace
Truce of Future of the Left

13 May: Laptop Friday – If you work from home, freelance or are self-employed, head to this new group that gives like-minded workers a chance to meet each other, chat, and share ideas. 15 May: Absolutely Fabulous Vegan Festival – Anyone who’s been to an Absolutely Fabulous Vegan Fair in the past few months will know that the events are nothing short of a vegan haven. 15 May: Andy Black – Lead singer of Black Veil Brides Andy Biersack heads out on tour with his début solo album. Support comes from rising stars Creeper. Expect noise and a lot of black. (Sun 15 May, tickets from £18, Tramshed, Clare Road CF11 6QP – more info)

21 May: Cardiff Gung Ho Seriously Fun 5k – A giant inflatable 5k charity obstacle course is coming to Cardiff, and everyone over 48 inches tall is welcome to have a go! Grab a group of mates, register online then run or walk your way through ten of the greatest inflatable obstacles. 21-27 May: The 2016 CSAD Summer Show – Cardiff School of Art and Design launch their annual summer show, which is always a feast for the eyes. 25 May: Bright Light Bright Light – Master of bleepy music Rod Thomas, a.k.a. Bright Light Bright Light, returns to Cardiff long after his super successful 2012 debut. It’s good to see that, despite now living in London and New York, the Neath boy hasn’t forgotten how to party in his homeland. (Wed 25 May, £9+, Clwb Ifor Bach, Womanby Street CF10 1BR – more info)

27-29 May: Strange Daze Fest – This bank holiday weekender of psychedelic, rock, noise and experimental music takes over six venues on the wonderful Womanby Street. Lost Lands

27-28 May: Lost Lands Rooftop Cinema – Everyone’s favourite al fresco cinema returns to Jacobs Antiques with a Leonardo Di Caprio double bill. Friday, you can watch The Beach with Brother Thai street food and Saturday you can see The Departed with food from Feastfull Macho Nacho. 28 May: Wales Beat-box Championships 2016 – Watch grown men and women tear up the airwaves with this year’s Welsh Beatbox Championships. They’ll be crowning the best main solos, loop station and tag team performances. (Sat 28 May, Clwb Ifor Bach, 11 Womanby Street CF10 1BR – more info)

28 May: Manic Street Preachers – To mark the 20 year anniversary of Everything Must Go (yes, TWENTY years!), Manic Street Preachers play a special gig at Swansea’s Liberty Stadium. Art Car

29 May: Art Car Bootique – This year’s Art Car Bootique, an eclectic and eccentric mix of art, performance, food, music, vintage fashion and curated projects, centres on all things European. Chapter’s car park will be transformed into a psychedelic village fete of over 70 stalls, perfect for an afternoon of fun. (Sun 29 May, Chapter Arts Centre, Market Road, Canton CF5 1QE – more info)

29 May: Babylon Rooftop Party: The Start of Summer – For the third summer, Babylon take to the roof of Jacobs Market for a series of outdoor parties and events. Resident DJs and special guests will soundtrack cocktail drinking, dancing and carnival facepainting. Tickets will go quickly. 30 May: South Wales Dog and Family Fun Day – Returning for a fifth year, this day of fun for families, dog lovers and people enjoying the bank holiday brings animal displays, live music, a funfair, a petting zoo and an Artisan Food Court to Fonmon.
