British and Irish Lions tour 2013: Gethin Jenkins out of first Lions match against Barbarians

Gethin Jenkins will miss the Lions’ opening tour match against the Barbarians in Hong Kong after tweaking a calf muscle.

The Wales prop has a history of trouble with his calf and will not be risked against Dai Young’s invitational side.

However, the current problem is not believed to be serious, with coach Warren Gatland expecting Jenkins to be fit and ready to take on Western Force on Wednesday, June 5.

Jenkins revealed he sustained the fresh injury during his substitute’s appearance for Toulon in their Heineken Cup win against Clermont a week last Saturday.

“I don’t think it’s a serious,” said Blues-bound Jenkins.

“It’s a bit of a niggle really, probably because I came off the bench in the final from doing nothing to defending for 20 minutes.”

Gatland added: “The physios are hopeful he will be up and running within three or four days.

“He’s had ongoing problems with the calf for a long, long time but the physios are confident he’ll be available for the second or third game.

“But other than that we have been pretty lucky with the guys who have played in finals and we haven’t picked up an injuries in training either.”

The Lions have landed in Hong Kong after flying out from Heathrow overnight.
