Cardiff City set for glamour August friendly against Spanish giants Real Sociedad

Cardiff City are set to prepare for a crack at the Premier League by taking on Uefa Champions League-bound Spanish aristocrats Real Sociedad this summer.

The Basque team, fourth only to Barcelona, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid in La Liga last season, are pencilled in for a glamour friendly at  Cardiff City Stadium over the first weekend in August.

The game is yet to be formally rubber-stamped, but talks between the two clubs are well advanced.

Sources in Spain say it is “99 per cent certain to go ahead.”

Malky Mackay’s Bluebirds have low-key pre-season away games arranged against Forest Green Rovers, Cheltenham and Brentford in July.

The match against Real Sociedad will be followed by a second home game against top-rated opposition still to be finalised.

City will then start their Premier League campaign against West Ham away before they welcome Manchester City and Everton to the Welsh capital for back-to-back home fixtures. Real Sociedad pipped Valencia and Malaga to the final Champions League spot available to Spanish clubs after a storming finish to the La Liga season.

They beat Valencia, Sevilla and Deportivo La Coruna and earned a 3-3 draw with Jose Mourinho’s Real Madrid.

Their credentials were displayed further when they beat star-studded Barcelona 3-2 earlier this year, coming back from two goals down to stun Lionel Messi and co.

Real Sociedad don’t possess the Galcticos who dominate Spanish football with Barcelona and Real Mdrid, but they are a European force who will give the Bluebirds an idea of where they really stand for their exciting top-flight campaign.

Their main men include former Arsenal forward Carlos Vela and highly-rated central defender Inigo Martinez. Their captain is Spanish midfield player Xabi Prieto.

Philippe Montonier was head coach at Sociedad as they finished fourth in the table, but he stepped down to take over at French club Rennes.

His assistant, Jagoba Arresate is the new man in charge at Sociedad.

Real Sociedad say they have five main pre-season fixtures arranged, against French club Toulouse plus Portugal’s Sporting Lisbon and then Premier League trio Cardiff City, Norwich and Southampton.
