Cardiff footbridge across the River Taff is closed for repairs

Blackweir footbridge across the River Taff closed today for essential maintenance.

The bridge was recently affected by the hot weather, which caused it to shrink in parts. It will re-open on Friday morning.

A spokeswoman for Cardiff University, which maintains the bridge that links Pontcanna Fields to Talybont Halls, explained: “The university is currently carrying out essential safety maintenance on Blackweir Bridge. This is as a result of scorched shrinkage caused by the recent excessive heat.

“Due to heavy footfall the work cannot be safely completed whilst the bridge is in use. As a result the bridge will remain closed whilst the work is completed.

“Cardiff parks department and the city council engineers are aware of the situation. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.”

The area has recently been a hotspot for sun-seekers attempting to cool down – but a picture of adults pushing children across the weir, in the water, in buggies caused a public outcry and a warning from South Wales Police.
