Cardiff foodies get ready for a taste of Australia – the capital’s first Aussie-themed restaurant serving exotic meats like crocodile and kangaroo, as well as fresh fish and homemade cocktails – will be here soon.
The Outback on Cowbridge Road East is due to open at the end of July and will stock exotic meats from London and the rest of the meat is sourced from local Cardiff butchers.
Owner Ciprian Craciunescu, has used his experience as a chef of nine years and his travels in Australia and New Zealand to craft his menu. He’s even imported Australian peppercorns!
He says: “My uncles live in Australia and New Zealand. One lives in Sydney and one in Auckland and I lived in Australia for almost six months and visited New Zealand twice.
“Being a chef I was always learning about Australian food and also the native bush tucker food. The whole concept of The Outback is a mix between Australian contemporary cuisine and native bushfood, with hints from British and Italian cuisine, blended in a 100% fine dining adventure.”
Included on the menu are kangaroo steaks, ostrich meat, venison and wild boar and crocodile burgers.
Ciprian added: “We’ll also have Barammundi fish and scallops , native Damper bread and Aussie style BBQ sauce and Kakadu plum sauce.
“We even imported Australian Mountain peppercorns and salt flakes just so we can make the place 100% authentic. And all of our wines are Australian!”
You’ll find The Outback at 149 Cowbridge Road and it’s due to open at the end of July.
