Cricket: Panteg romp to eight-wicket win against Penarth

THE Division One Second XI is very close and any one of the top 10 teams could yet win the title.

Penarth made 181-9 at Panteg with captain James Erasmus getting 82 and Vijay Joshi taking 3-30 for the home side.

Richard Jeffries made 70, Rhys Salkeld 42 not out and Tom McLaren 33 as Panteg romped home by eight wickets.

A tight game at Pentyrch saw visitors Chepstow set a target of 209-4 thanks to Scot Bailey (64), Paul Bennett (35) and Oliver Thornhill (35).

Jamie Mills made 54 and Dave Tallis 34 but Pentyrch closed on 206-7, just three runs short.

Radyr reached 244-7 at home to Usk with David Woolston making a marvellous 124 and next best was Rhys Mander (21no) as Jack Stedman took 2-39 and Andy Graveson 2-46.

Dominic Rees scored 51 not out and Jake Roderick 32 as Usk were bowled out for 161 with Razaq Zahid taking 9-1-19-3 for Radyr and Mander 3-35.

Welsh Asians made 203 all out against Abergavenny at Llandaff with Azmat Khan scoring 64, Adeep Ilyas 49 and Shamas Tabraiz 26. Andy Timpson took 4-41 for Abergavenny.

Craig Whistance made 33 in the Abergavenny innings but their last man was caught off the final delivery with the scores tied. Sanaan Umeed took 3-19 off nine overs for the Asians and Tabraiz 9-1-33-3.

Scott Malpas made a fine 104 for Barry against Malpas and Rhys Howells 49. Mark Sadler took 2-9 for Malpas, Ian Small 2-18 and Jamie Hall 2-38.

Jake Powell managed 39 but Malpas were dismissed for 102 with Stuart Evans taking 5-20, Martin Baker 3-20 and Paul Murphy 2-23.

Joe Fitzpatrick took 3-35 as Vale reached 143-9 at Blackwood who got the runs for four wickets with Andrew Shelton making 46 and Andrew Carke 35.

Brecon lost to Newport Fugitives and Creigiau easily overcame Newbridge with skipper Dewi Evans scoring 61 not out and Callum Bassett-Jones taking an impressive 4-5.

Lisvane were foiled by the weather at home to Miskin Manor and Croesyceiliog thrashed Rogerstone.

Alex Kryjon made a marvellous 117 not out, Luc Kear 58 and Adrian Webber 34 as Croesy totalled 241-5 with captain Mark Harnden taking 2-45 for Rogerstone.

Matt Williams then took 4-13, Huw Kear 3-4 and James Jacob 2-17 as Rogerstone were bowled out for just 51.

Llantwit Fardre scored 140 all out at Llanrumney against Cardiff Gymkhana with Steve Thomas getting 26 as Ahmed Khan took 4-10 for Gymkhana and Paul Franklin 3-27.

Taimoor Ahmed (58no) and Zeeshan Masih (40) then led Gymkhana to a four wicket win with Johnny Ball taking 2-42 for Fardre.

Robert Tippings made 108 not out and Rob Thompson 40 in Ebbw Vale’s 249-5 against Machen at Eugene Cross Park. Zac Moore had 4-24 for Machen.

Ben Clifford scored 62 not out but Machen managed only 115 in their reply as Iwan Tippings took 2-12 for Ebbw Vale and Thompson 2-20.

Aled Hughes (66no) and Richard Lancaster (57) were the pick as Pontymister scored 224-6 at home to Ponthir who replied with 158-6 with Alan Burkitt getting 60 not out and  Declan Sims 40 as Gareth Price took 3-35 off nine overs for Pontymister.

The match between Whitchurch Heath and Dinas Powis was abandoned with Dinas Powis struggling on 37-5 chasing 168-8.
