When Simon Gale, 41, from Thornhill, Cardiff was given a chance to have a British Gas smart meter at home, he jumped at the chance to take control of his family’s energy use.
“With two children, making any savings possible is more important than ever”, said Simon, who has lived at his three bedroom home for eight years with wife, Helen and children, Alex and Sophie.
“I had the smart meter fitted in May. It was straightforward; both an electricity and gas smart meter were fitted in about 90 minutes.”
Smart meters show how much gas and electricity people are using, as it’s used, and the cost in pounds and pence.
“I can now see how much gas and electricity we’re using anytime I like. I’ll receive an energy bill every month as normal but it will now be an exact bill and I don’t have to submit meter readings.
“I even receive a Smart Energy Report showing me how our energy use breaks down and we’re given advice on how to make savings.
“I’ve worked out that we use about £2 per day so that’s about £60 per month. I was paying about £120 direct debit every month but of course it’s summer so we’re using less energy. I like the fact we’re in control in our home.”
British Gas has already installed one million smart meters in UK homes as part of a Government initiative that will see all current gas and electricity meters replaced by 2020.
