A trio of fishing enthusiasts are causing a splash with their bait range.
David Bailey, Ian Stones and Mark Potter from Bolton are the brains behind Stinky Stuff, a new range of bait enticers.
The product is used by anglers across the UK, Europe and the USA and is distributed through their company, Fishing Baits Ltd.
Sport fishing has become a multibillion dollar industry across the world and in the UK alone is considered to be one of the biggest sports and most popular leisure activities.
Last year, the UK tackle industry was worth around £570m.
David Bailey, a keen amateur angler, was looking to find an edge for his peg and was inspired to come up with a unique product for the fishing industry.
Working with other anglers he initially looked at bringing out new flavours of boilies or pellets.
But having seen that this market was saturated, he then began to notice that the big names in the sport preferred to use sticky baits.
He then developed a bait delivered from an aerosol which when applied to the bait, attracted the fish with smells that replicated various foodstuffs.
Having come up with the product concept, the three owners then set about developing the range working with a chemist to experiment with different flavours and smells.
Bailey said: “It was crucial to make the formulation aquatically safe and find something that triggered a fish to find the food source.
“We tested rigorously using a small team of anglers to find out which smells and flavours attracted fish to their bait.
“The idea behind the aerosol can came about because nearly all the other liquid attractants on the market tended to come in pump action containers which when applied to the bait, easily washed off and quickly dispersed through the water.
“This is no good for specimen carp anglers who sometimes leave their bait in the water for 48 hours or longer.
“They want that attractant to be released from their bait over this period of time.
“When we considered how spray-on deodorants massively outsell roll-ons, we started to think about why this was.
“When you spray an aerosol can the particles are released at such a velocity the payload impregnates what it is sprayed onto.
“When we put our strong and most potent attractant in the can, we achieved results where anglers could still smell our product on their bait and even on their terminal tackle, well over 48 hours after it had been in the water. “The results were so successful that we launched a Sea Range.
“Traditionally the strong currents and salt in the sea usually wash attractants off easily so much so, that there hasn’t really been an attractant on the market for the sea that worked until we came along.”
On the back of the original flavour, they now have Peeler Crab, Crayfish, Krill, Bubblegum Cream, Vanilla Peanut Cream and Black Jack in the range. And for the sea angler, there is Sea Original.
The firm has a small dedicated team of anglers that test their products.
Bailey added: “The success rate of anglers using Stinky Stuff has been magnificent and the feedback superb.
“We currently sell throughout the UK and to all countries in Europe.”
“We are often told people catch for fun using our sprays when nobody else on the water is catching anything.
“Only recently, somebody had been out on boat fishing for cod and everyone onboard were astonished at one angler’s catch rate using Stinky Stuff Original against everyone else’s on the boat.
“The product has been used extensively across Europe, and we have also carried out some minor testing in the USA. The results for bass were prolific with our crayfish, or crawfish, as they call it in the USA.”
The owners of Stinky Stuff are now looking to extend their sales to the retail trade.
“We’d like to be front and centre of every shop in the country,” Bailey said. “Our goals for the future are to see Stinky Stuff become a major player, firstly in the UK angling bait market and then Europe. “We are also keeping a close eye on the US marketplace which is a massive cash cow.”
