Hessle fishing chain Chapmans Angling has been sold for £1.4m

A Hessle-based fishing retailer has been bought by one of the country’s biggest angling firms in a deal worth £1.4m.

Chapmans Angling, which also has a store in Scunthorpe, is based in Hull Road, Hessle, and in the last financial year hit sales of more than £3m.

The business has now been bought by Angling Direct, the UK’s largest specialist fishing tackle and equipment retailer.

Paul Devlin, owner of Chapmans Angling, said: “I would like to thank everyone who has worked for me during my 16 years as owner of Chapmans Angling.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed working with such talented and passionate people that have been instrumental in making Chapmans the success it is today.

“It wasn’t an easy decision for me to sell but Angling Direct’s vision is the perfect option for the future success of these two superb stores.”

Chapmans Angling caters for all types of fishing.

The Hessle store, which covers 6,500 sq.ft. of retail space, offers customers with a choice of more than 18,000 product lines.

The business is now looking forward to reeling in the benefits that comes with being owned by fishing giant Angling Direct.

The acquisition takes Angling Direct’s store count in the North East to 26.

Darren Bailey, CEO at Angling Direct, said: “Chapmans Angling is a high quality business which will give Angling Direct a strong foothold in the North East of England.

“The Group will continue to provide the very best level of service across both stores, with Chapmans’ online distribution moving south to Angling Direct’s main distribution centre in Norfolk.”

The news comes just months after it was announced rival firm Fishing Republic, which has a store in Hessle Road, was saved from closure after the chain was bought by an “unconnected third party.”
