A man who twice raped and assaulted a woman after she saw lewd pictures on his phone has been jailed for 11 years.
Londoner Vaughn Powell, 34, was jailed for 11 years at Cardiff Crown Court after a jury found him guilty of rape and causing actual bodily harm.
The court heard how he had been jailed for five years in London for possessing heroin and cocaine with intent to supply and also being involved in sexual activity with a child under 16.
But he started to contact a woman in South Wales while still serving his sentence and later continued to be in touch via text, telephone and letter.
Passing a fresh sentence on him, Judge Stephen Hopkins QC said: “The two of you shared a base sexual attitude to courtship which involved sending each other intimate photographs of your bodies.”
When they eventually met, he said, she found he was not only charming but violent too.
Looking at his phone, she found he had filmed a woman in the shower and taken pictures looking up ladies’ skirts on the Underground.
When they rowed, he raped her twice. He also throttled her, broke her nose with a head-butt and twisted her hand until he snapped one of her fingers.
Powell denied the charges brought against him but was convicted by a jury following a trial during which the woman, who cannot be named, gave evidence.
As the judge outlined details of the case while passing sentence, Powell was heard objecting from the video link room at Parc Prison, Bridgend from where he appeared on screens in the Cardiff courtroom.
With his agreement, the live link was cut, with Judge Hopkins telling prison staff: “You can take him back to his cell.”
The sentencing hearing then continued without him, as the judge said Powell’s previous sexual offending was worrying and was a serious and significant aggravating factor to the present case.
He had been jailed for 14 days in at the age of 23 for indecent exposure and months later given two-and-a-half years at Harrow Crown Court for indecently assaulting a female under 14.
He was put on the Sex Offenders’ Register but failed to comply with its notification requirements and was later back at the Harrow court for indecently exposing himself again.
His five-year term was imposed at Dorchester Crown Court.
Judge Hopkins described him as controlling”.
Defence counsel Janet McDonald said Powell, had had “good” relationships with women in the past.
