Merthyr Town poised to net goalkeeper Craig Morris

Former Llanelli and Neath goalkeeper Craig Morris looks set to sign for Merthyr Town.

Trostre-born Morris, 32, played for the Martyrs in a pre-season fixture against a young Cardiff City XI.

Morris has built a reputation of being a high quality shot-stopper and also commands his penalty area.

If he commits to Merthyr for the season, Morris will go head-to-head with last season’s first choice Giles Cutlan for the Southern League opener against North Leigh on August 17.

Before then, Merthyr have two friendlies at Port Talbot tomorrow (3pm) and newly-promoted Welsh League club Rhoose on Tuesday (7.30pm).

Joint managers Garry Shephard and Danny Carter have signed three new players for the new season.

But they have lost Jon Newall, now with Cinderford Town, and Garyn Preen, who has played for Port Talbot during pre-season.

The new players in the Martyrs squad are ex-Swansea winger Kerry Morgan, teenage right-back Danny Summerfield from Newport and Zaki Misbah, a former Blackburn Rovers trainee and Barry Town centre-forward.

Merthyr have 20 players signed for the new season but may yet add several more, including goalkeeper Morris.
