This giant fish is an almost mythical specimen who has been nicknamed Silverback by the anglers who have been trying to catch him in a Devon lake for years.
Silverback is reputed to be the biggest living leather carp in Southern England and weighed in at 53lbs 4oz when he was finally caught – and then released to swim again – this week.
Silverback isn’t far off the UK record for a leather carp – that title goes to a fish known as ‘Heather the Leather’ weighing in at 54lb 8oz.
Silverback was hooked by Ryan Owen, who was so delighted by his dream catch he later waded chest-deep into the water to release the giant fish unharmed.
Mid Devon up-to-date
Zyg Gregorek who runs Anglers’ Paradise fishing lakes near Halwill, said anglers have been trying for years to catch Silverback. He said: “This monster is a record for Devon and probably the whole South West.”
Leather carp have reduced numbers of red blood cells which can slow their growth, making large examples of the species rare and much sought after.
Consequently they are smaller than the common carp which can grow to more than 10lbs heavier than either Heather the Leather or Silverback.
