Ninian Park nostalgia: A look back at the highlights and memories from an iconic ground

After Cardiff City clinched promotion to the Premier League, a few of the club’s adult fans may have taken a moment to remember some of the promotion parties of the past, at Ninian Park.

The promotion celebrations of 1993, or a decade earlier in 1983. Many of those who invaded the pitch on those occasions may have dreamt of celebrating promotion to the top flight on the very same pitch.

But it wasn’t at Ninian Park that fans were celebrating promotion to the Premier League this year, it was the new Cardiff City Stadium, a stadium more than fit for purpose when it comes to the prospect of hosting Premier League football.

Most accepted that Cardiff City’s Ninian Park home was in desperate need of a facelift, in the end it wasn’t given a facelift, it was replaced entirely, and the Cardiff City Stadium will now forever be a place of fond memories for a new generation of fans.

But for the older generation, memories of the Grange End won’t fade, here’s the history of Ninian Park, in pictures.

Ninian Park was built in 1910, and was occupied by Cardiff City for 99 years.  It hosted international football matches, basketball games, pop concerts and more.

Even the pope turned up in 1982, holding a rally at the venue. In the all-standing era of football league grounds, the ground boasted a record attendance of 62,000, compared to its seated capacity of 21,000 at the time of closing.
