Police have launched a murder investigation after a six-week-old baby boy died following an alleged assault.

The boy, who has been named locally as Alfie, lived with his mum Donna Sullock in Fairwater, Cardiff, but was assaulted at an address in Nelson.

Michael Pearce, 32, was arrested and charged with assault and appeared at Caerphilly Magistrates’ Court on Monday.

A spokeswoman for Gwent Police said Alfie died this afternoon.

Tributes have been paid to the “little prince” on Facebook.

Among them, Catherine Robinson wrote: “Shine bright like a diamond little one xxx”

Chelsie Evans said: “Goodbye little prince. Forever in our hearts, taken too soon. Sleep well beautiful angel. Love and thoughts with you mummy and her family.”

Gwent Police said officers were called to a report of a baby not breathing at an address in Nelson at 9.15pm on Friday, August 16.

It is understood Alfie lived with his mum in the Fairwater area of Cardiff, but had been at the Nelson address when a 999 call was made to say he was not breathing.
