Weatherman nails 58-letter name of Welsh town in single try

LONDON, Sept. 10 (UPI) — A British weatherman became a viral hero when he flawlessly pronounced the name of Welsh city Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch.

Liam Dutton, meteorologist for Britain’s Channel 4, was delivering a report on the range of temperatures across Britain Tuesday and didn’t skip a beat when it came time to read the name of the Welsh city with the highest temperature — and longest name — in the region: Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch.

Dutton, who was born in the Welsh capital, Cardiff, and studied geography at the University of Wales in Swansea, thanked supporters on Twitter after footage of his pronunciation achievement went viral.

“There’s always a chance that you can stumble, but that’s the nature doing the job. I’ve been doing the weather on TV and radio for 13 years now, so I’m at a point where I’m really comfortable on-air and don’t get nervous,” Dutton told Wales Online. “It is definitely the most challenging place name in the U.K. to pronounce. The only other place names that tend to catch me out are places that are said nothing like they are written. But you soon learn from your mistakes quickly, when people let you know you’ve said it wrong!”

YouTube’s closed captioning service had a bit more trouble with the name, confusing Dutton’s pronunciation for “critical English mechanical problems like to see a go go go.”
