Welsh hope in BBC Cardiff Singer of the World Gary Griffiths fails in bid to reach Song Prize award final

Welsh baritone Gary Griffiths has failed in his bid to make it through to the final of the Song Prize in the 2013 BBC Cardiff Singer of the World competition.

The five young singers who will battle it out for the award, were this afternoon revealed as American mezzo-soprano Jamie Barton, Olena Tokar, a soprano from the Ukraine, English tenor Ben Johnson, tenor Yuri Gorodetski from Belarus, and Hungarian soprano Maria Celeng.

They will take to the stage at St David’s Hall on Friday evening as they compete in front of an international panel of judges.

The Song Prize runs alongside the main prize, which is still within the grasp of Welsh hopeful Griffiths.

He will launch his bid for it on Wednesday night, when he performs in his heat at St David’s Hall.

The final takes place at the venue on Sunday.
