Warren Gatland is likely to recall veteran scrum-half Mike Phillips after the sickening injury suffered by Rhys Webb in Cardiff.

Webb’s screams could be heard over the referee’s microphone as his left leg buckled in the 27th minute against Italy.

Having almost certainly lost his starting scrum-half, Gatland has a dilemma going into the opening Pool A Test against Uruguay on September 20.

The New Zealander coach is now likely to send for veteran No 9 Phillips from Racing Metro.

The 33 year old made his debut for Wales in 2003 and has played 94 Tests — with an additional five for the Lions — scoring nine tries.

That was not the end of Gatland’s worries, with full-back Leigh Halfpenny carried off on a stretcher and given oxygen after suffering a knee injury when appearing to stumble late on.

James Hook is likely to step up if needed. Gareth Anscombe can also be called up but has an ankle injury.
