She had been warned he would be bigger more than most babies.

But Saima Amaf was still shocked when the latest addition to her family arrived weighing a staggering 12lb 9oz.

Her son Aaron was almost twice the size of an average baby when he was delivered by a planned Caesarean section at the University Hospital of Wales on October 14.

Mrs Amaf had previously given birth to relatively small babies with Azeel, now eight, only 4lb 12oz and brother Sami, five, less than a third of his brother’s weight at just 3lb 8oz.

The average weight of a boy born in Britain is 7lb 8oz.

‘The midwife told us she had never seen such a big baby,’ said father Munawar Amaf, 38, from Cardiff.

‘He was like a celebrity in hospital – all the doctors and nurses wanted to see him.’

The couple found out at their 20-week scan that they were expecting a boy and a further scan suggested he was going to be a large baby.

‘We had a scan at 32 weeks and they told us he was growing well,’ he said.

‘The doctor said he was very big and suggested a caesarean at that stage, but we were surprised because our other sons were both born by natural delivery.

‘We wondered why we needed a caesarean, but we didn’t realise then quite how big he would be.’

According to the most recent figures from the Office for National Statistics, of the 33,747 babies born in Wales in 2013, a total of 71 weighed more than 11lb.

The biggest baby born naturally in Britain was George King, who was delivered at the Gloucester Royal Infirmary in February 2013, weighing 15lb 7oz, records show.

The largest ever born in Britain was born at the Liverpool Women’s Hospital last year, tipping the scales at 15lb 10oz.

Mrs Amaf, 36, spent three days in hospital before returning to the family’s home in Roath.

‘We were worried about the birth, but the midwives were very caring and talked us through everything so we knew what to expect,’ she said.

‘It was amazing to bring him home – his brothers were so excited to meet him.

‘He looks exactly like Azeel when he was a baby.

‘They just want to play with him all the time. It’s easy to forget he’s only two-weeks-old because he’s so big.’
