CITY’s Aron Gunnarsson captained Iceland to a World Cup qualification first-leg play-off 0-0 draw with Croatia on Friday night, to leave the tie hanging in the balance as they head for the return leg in Zagreb.
It was a valuable draw in the end for the home side in Reykjavik, playing much of the second half with ten men following the dismissal of midfielder Olafur Ingi Skulason just five minutes into the second-half.
Croatia enjoyed the majority of possession, but a resolute Iceland showed the determination that got them to the play-offs once again, claiming a valuable 0-0 draw and turning the second leg match in Zagreb on Tuesday night a ‘winner takes all’ affair. Should they win in Zagreb, Head Coach Lars Lagerback will have guided Iceland to their first ever major finals.
Already in Croatia preparing for the second-leg tie, the play-off second-leg clash gets underway at 7.15pm (GMT), we all wish Gunnar the best of luck in Zagreb.
