City XI face Barry Town United on Saturday, 3pm
While Malky Mackay’s first team stormed to the Championship title, Kevin Cooper’s development side also had a lot of success, reaching the final of the Professional Development League Two – missing out on winning the title after a 1-3 aet defeat to Charlton Athletic, something Cooper’s men will be looking to better in the coming campaign. Success on the pitch also followed for Barry Town with the Dragons finishing sixth in Welsh Division One, while a 2-0 quarter final win over Flint Town United saw Barry reach the Semi-Finals of the Welsh Cup for the first time in a decade, losing to eventual winners Prestatyn Town.
The club was funded from 2011 – 2013 by the Barry Town Supporters Club. After failing to find a buyer for the club, owner Stuart Lovering pulled them out of the Welsh Football League in May despite long protests from the Supporters Club. The young City team defeated a valiant Barry side 2-1 in a highly entertaining encounter. The opening goal of the game was scored with just ten minutes on the clock, City midfielder Tommy O’Sullivan swinging in a curving corner for Israeli International Dekel Keinan to nod the ball home. The young Cardiff eleven controlled the opening half with Ben Nugent and Deji Oshilaja standing out in a composed performance. It was another young talent in substitute Declan John that helped Cardiff to their second goal of the game. The Welsh International came on for the away side at half time and did not take long to influence the game, providing a great cross following a mazy run down the left hand side. Soon after, Jesse Darko fired a shot from inside the area that was superbly saved by Town keeper Brendan Cropley. The home defence failed to clear and Kevin Sainte-Luce managed to smash a shot into the bottom corner from just outside the six yard box. The biggest cheer and arguably the best goal of the night came on eighty four minutes as the home side grabbed an exquisite consolation goal through 2011/12 season top scorer Josh Bell. An incredibly well worked free kick from the home side on the edge of the Cardiff area with Bell firing the ball through the wall and into the back of the net to the delight of over a thousand spectators.
