Cardiff Bay gets wet and wild as Extreme Sailing Series docks in capital

The impressive 2016 Extreme Sailing Series have made Cardiff Bay look like St Tropez as the second day of racing got underway in the capital.

The skyline of the Wales Millennium Centre and Pierhead Building provided a stunning backdrop as a breeze of 25 knots blew around the racecourse.

Crowds packed the shore to watch the superfast foiling GC32 catamarans blast round the Bay at speeds of more than 30 knots in what was touted as the closest race this season.

Seven international teams, including Swiss stars Alinghi, Oman Air, SAP Extreme Sailing Team and CHINA One.

Dubbed Formula One On Water, the action which started yesterday takes place until tomorrow, June 26 and will mark the UK debut of a brand new fleet of hydro-foiling GC32 catamarans, all of which will be put through their paces in some fast and furious conditions.

The free event includes a mix of thrilling on-the-water entertainment, with sailing expert Mark ‘Corky’ Rhodes commentating live on the sailing action, not to mention a huge range of on-shore activities.

Cardiff International White Water Centre will offer the opportunity to try canoeing, while Cardiff Bay Water Activity Centre is bringing along Laser Blast and Eliptigos, a mix of push bike and cross-trainer, for you to have a go.
