County Championship cricket: Glamorgan v Gloucestershire live updates

Scorecard

Glamorgan lost a wicket with the first ball of the game when opener Gareth Rees was caught behind by Welsh wicket-keeper Cameron Herring from a Will Gidman delivery.

Stewart Walters was trapped lbw for four with the final ball of the fifth over as Glamorgan slipped to 18 for two.

Will Bragg looked impressive for his 25 before he played a loose cut shot from Matt Taylor as Gloucestershire captain Micheal Klinger took an impressive diving catch at mid-off as the hosts slumped to 33 for three.

That became 36 for four when Jacques Rudolph was bowled by David Payne for four from 37 balls. The South African never looked comfortable on his Glamorgan debut in seaming and swinging conditions after being worked over by Gidman.

Murray Goodwin was the next to fall as he edged a Payne delivery to Alex Gidman at slip as Glamorgan were reduced to 47 for five.

In very gloomy conditions, this soon became 47 for six as Glamorgan captain Mark Wallace suffered a second successive first-ball duck when he was trapped by Payne.

Rain stopped the hat-trick ball attempt for the Gloucestershire left-armer as the players left the field at 12.30pm following a chaotic 90 minutes.

Team news

Glamorgan all-rounder Jim Allenby has been passed fit for Sunday’s Division Two county championship clash against Gloucestershire at the Swalec Stadium.

Allenby suffered an ankle injury this week but was named in the starting side to face the west Country outfit.

South African batsman Jacques Rudolph is set to make his debut after missing the opening 10-wicket win against Surrey at the Kia Oval because he was competing in an Ironman. Chris Cooke was the batsman to miss out.

Gloucestershire keep faith with the same side they used in the opening defeat against Hampshire.  Matt Taylor’s exploits at the County Ground last week will ensure he retains his place alongside the other seam options of Will Gidman, James Fuller and David Payne.

A settled batting line-up remains with captain Michael Klinger leading from the front at the top of the order while Welsh wicket-keeper Cameron Herring is included.

Glamorgan:
W Bragg, G Rees, S Walters, J Rudolph, M Goodwin, J Allenby, M Wallace (capt, wk), G Wagg, R Smith, D Cosker, M Hogan

Gloucestershire: M Klinger (captain), C Dent, W Tavare, A Gidman, H Marshall, W Gidman, C Herring (wk), T Smith, J Fuller, D Payne, M Taylor.

History

Mark Wallace and his team will be looking to make it two wins out of two after their opening 10-wicket win against Surrey.

There have been six previous seasons when Glamorgan have won their opening two games in the county championship.

Most recently in 1995 when the Welsh county, under Matthew Maynard’s captaincy they defeated Somerset at Taunton by eight wickets in the last week of April, before beating Northamptonshire by three wickets at Sophia Gardens in early May.

Glamorgan met Gloucestershire at the Cardiff ground in the closing game of the 2013 season – a contest which the Welsh county won by eight wickets with Michael Hogan, their fiery Australian pace bowler claiming his 100th wicket in all cricket last summer.

However, it was Jim Allenby who produced a match-winning performance with both bat and ball as the all-rounder made 85 in Glamorgan’s first innings, before completing a match return of seven for 47.

Glamorgan have recorded four successive victories on Welsh soil against the west Country side with Gloucestershire’s last championship victory in Cardiff in 2005.
