Fishing society buys Somerset Levels site | South West Deals News

A Gloucestershire-headquartered national fishing society has expanded its fishery portfolio with the purchase of an operation on the Somerset Levels after securing a £625,000 commercial mortgage from Barclays.

The Ashmead Fishery was originally stocked with fingerling carp from a Surrey trout farm in 1971.

It has been snapped up by The Carp Society, with the primary aim of developing and promoting carp angling, and now has a significant membership countrywide.

The acquisition of the 17-acre wetlands fishery is designed to complement The Carp Society’s existing portfolio of Lakes located at Lechlade, namely Horseshoe Lake, Farriers and Little Farriers Lake.

Derek Stritton, chairman at The Carp Society, said: “Ashmead Fishery offers the angler an unrivalled opportunity to fish for some of the UK’s finest carp and by working closely with the existing owners, we are pleased to have been able to acquire such a renowned fishery in a spectacular natural environment.”

Stuart Marshall, Barclays business relationship manager, added: “We are pleased to have been able to support The Carp Society in their expansion and acquisition of Ashmead Fishery.

“The organisation is a long-standing Barclays customer and we look forward to helping them continue to achieve their growth plans in coming months and years.”
