Despite the heavy defeat to Kent on Saturday afternoon at the SSE SWALEC, Glamorgan remain in fourth place in the Division Two table, level on points with Northamptonshire but above them by virtue of their greater number of victories.
Rain had fallen over Northampton for most of the night, and it was still lightly falling when the players and officials arrived at the ground. Glamorgan’s last visit to Northamptonshire in 2013 ended in defeat as the home side completed an emphatic by an innings and 25 runs in a contest which helped to clinch a promotion spot for the East Midlands side. The Welsh county though can look back more fondly on their visit in 2012 to Northampton when they won by three wickets, thanks to a composed innings by Jim Allenby, plus a breezy knock by John Glover, which saw the Welsh county home in a rain-affected contest as they successfully chased a stiff target of 351 on the final day of the contest.
Once again, there are several personal milestones which are looming with Michael Hogan leading the Club’s wicket-takers in 2015 with 44 first-class wickets. Graham Wagg currently has 41 scalps, together with 818 runs, whilst Colin Ingram who posted his maiden Championship hundred against Kent has lifted his first-class tally in 2015 to 781 runs and is set to follow his South African compatriot Jacques Rudolph who is still absent on paternity leave, by exceeding 800 runs. For all three, there is just one more Championship match remaining – away to Gloucestershire next week – when the 1,000 run barrier could be crossed.
