Glamorgan head to North Wales for their next encounter in the Specsavers County Championship as they welcome Derbyshire to Colwyn Bay cricket club’s ground in Rhos-on-Sea , with the four-day match scheduled to start at 11am on Sunday, July 17th.
This is only the second time in their history that Derbyshire will have played a first-class match at Colwyn Bay, with their previous visit being in August 1966. In that match fifty years ago , Glamorgan were the victors by 63 runs after Ossie Wheatley had taken 6/42 in the Derbyshire first innings, en route to claiming 100 Championship wickets. Alan Jones also chipped in with a pair of half-centuries whilst Don Shepherd claimed 4/41 as Glamorgan wrapped up victory on the final afternoon of the three-day game.
Derbyshire’s most recent visit to Wales in May 2015 saw the game at Cardiff end in a rain-affected draw, with the weather being the only winner. In 2014 it was the home side who came out on top as Glamorgan defeated Derbyshire by 106 runs thanks to half-centuries by Chris Cooke and Graham Wagg, supported by some excellent seam bowling, Michael Hogan taking 4/38 to set-up a comprehensive victory.
Last year’s county match at Colwyn Bay proved to be a record-breaking affair as Lancashire’s Alviro Petersen and Ashwell Prince shared a stand of 501 for the third wicket as the Red Rose county amassed 698/5 before dismissing Glamorgan twice en route to victory by an innings and 157 runs.
Glamorgan also lost to Surrey by nine wickets in their annual Championship match at Colwyn Bay in 2014, whilst in 2013 a dramatic batting collapse at the Rhos-on-Sea ground handed Lancashire victory by 14 runs. The contest with Yorkshire in 2012 ended in a draw, but in August 2011 Glamorgan defeated Leicestershire at Colwyn Bay by 108 runs after James Harris had taken 5/45 and Will Bragg had posted his maiden first-class century.
