Matthew Mott: Future bright for Glamorgan

DEPARTING head coach Matthew Mott believes the foundations for a new, exciting Glamorgan side have been built by this year’s YB40 campaign.

Mott’s hopes of a glorious farewell before he heads home to Australia were ended by an all-star Nottinghamshire side, who celebrated an 87-run victory over the Welsh county at Lord’s.

But the 39-year-old former New South Wales boss firmly believes that Glamorgan are on the right track after some success-starved summers.

“I hope it’s the foundation, we’ve gone through a lot of turmoil over the last five or six years and this season has shown that if you stick with a nucleus of players and have your set plans then anything can be achieved,” he said. “We were within a couple of key moments of getting over the line, both with the ball and the bat.

“We put ourselves in that situation, which the club hasn’t done for some time, and these guys will draw a lot from that.

“It was a disappointed dressing room and they didn’t turn up to make up the numbers. We were unfancied but there was genuine belief that we were good enough if we played our best cricket; we were slightly off and Notts played their best cricket. There is the basis of some young players coming through and some quality players who will contest over the next few years and that’s exciting.”

Mott also paid tribute to Simon Jones, who played his last game before focusing on Twenty20 cricket and young spinner Andrew Salter, who, like Jones, claimed two wickets on the big stage.

“It would have been a fitting send-off for Simon to go out in a winning team but he goes out with his head held high,” he added.

“It was definitely his best spell of the year and Mark Wallace used him really well. It’s disappointing that he doesn’t get to be on the winning side but I am sure that from a personal point of view he will be happy with his performance.

“I think he put himself in the shop window, a lot of people around the world will have watched that game.

“There is a proliferation of Twenty20 competitions and he has put himself out there and bowled really well on a big stage again. I’m sure there will be interest from elsewhere and from within this country as well. He couldn’t have marketed himself better.

“As for Andrew Salter, he continues to impress. There’s a lot of steel about him and he wasn’t overawed by the occasion, he bowled extremely well.”
