Robbie Williams as Doctor Who? It very nearly happened…

Who would have thought it? Take That star Robbie Williams came close to being cast as Doctor Who
, it has been revealed.

has recently been cast as the 12th Time Lord replacing the current Doctor Matt Smith who bows out at Christmas.

But Blogtor Who has revealed that when casting the Doctor for online animated episode Scream Of The Shalka in 2003, Take That star Robbie almost got the part.

Producer Muirinn Lane Kelly revealed: “We got word that Robbie Williams was interested in playing The Doctor. We all sat around wondering, ’Is this a good idea? Is this a crazy idea?”

But in the end Angels singer Robbie wasn’t available and the role went to Richard E Grant, who voiced the Doctor for the one-off episode.

The British sci-fi favourite – filmed in Cardiff – was successfully rebooted in 2005, penned by Welsh TV screenwriter Russell T Davies and starring Christopher Eccleston.
