This is the expression of the defender after the referee and the TMO awarded a try after the defender touched the ball down. It is impossible to score an own try, the correct decision should have been an scrum 5 metres from the line.
The above scene was in Australia’s NRC as the Television Match Official mistook a defender for an attacker and awarded an own try.
The match between Sydney Stars and North Harbour Rays was 2o minutes in with only a try between the sides when North Harbour Rays prop Mitch Lewis stole the ball and placed it back in preparation of a clearance kick.
The area was crowded but the television replay clear shows the phase with n ambiguity the referee Ian Smith called a halt and asked the Television Match Official to clarify as the ball flirted with the try line.
Amazingly, even allowing for a matching sleeve of the the Stars’ kit, the response from the TMO that it was a try. ooops ! Effectively an own try.
The Sydney Stars went on to win 49-40.
