Newell excited by Glamorgan challenge

Nottinghamshire director of cricket Mick Newell is looking forward to a “great day” at Lord’s in the YB40 final with Glamorgan.

The Midlanders secured their place in the September 21 showpiece with a comprehensive eight-wicket victory over a disappointing Somerset side on Monday evening.

The south-west country arrived at Trent Bridge with a strong squad and high hopes but they were dismissed for just 119 in a match reduced to 35 over per side due to rain.

Notts then needed just 16.2 overs to reach their target, with Michael Lumb clubbing 10 fours in his rapid 46 and Samit Patel hitting eight boundaries in an unbeaten 26-ball knock of 43.

The triumphs sets up a final with the Welsh outfit, who overcame the challenge of Hampshire at the weekend to give themselves a chance of lifting their first one-day trophy at the home of cricket.

Notts are favourites to win their first one-day title since 1989 but Newell has made it clear that nobody will be taking Glamorgan for granted.

“Anybody who goes to Hampshire and wins – it’s a massive result,” he said. “We have huge respect for Glamorgan. They have a lot of experienced players and we look forward to playing them at Lord’s. It will be a great day.”
